The central myth associated with this ritual originates from the well-known event of Samudra Manthan (the churning of the cosmic ocean).

During the churning process carried out by the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons), a deadly, highly toxic substance called Halahala appeared. The poison was so potent that it threatened to destroy the entire universe through its destructive heat. Unable to bear its burning effect, all parties beseeched Lord Shiva for salvation.

In response, the poison caused an intense internal burning within Lord Shiva’s body. To alleviate the pain and cool himself, the gods continuously poured water from the Ganges (Gangajal), along with raw milk and other cooling fluids, over him. Pleased by this act of care and cooling, Shiva blessed the gods. The practice of Shiv Abhishek is a symbolic re-enactment of this mythic event, performed by devotees to provide cooling relief, show gratitude, and seek the divine grace of Lord Shiva.
