Nine days of worship for Hindu festival

SARIS swirled and guests danced to the beat as they celebrated a nine day Hindu festival. The Hindu festival of Navratri has been taking place all over Harrow, organised by the Gujarati community in schools and community halls to bring together the young and the old for more than a week of fun and friendship. Thousands of people joined members of the International Siddhashram Shakti Centre (ISSC) and Shri RajRajeshwar Guruji at Harrow Leisure Centre over the last week to enjoy traditional Gujarati dances known as Garba and Dandiya. During the first three nights, worshippers dedicate their prayers to the Goddess Durga while the next three days are devoted to Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth. The final three days are dedicated to worshiping Sarasvati, the Goddess of wisdom. Flowers and dancing celebrate festival of lights

HUNDREDS enjoyed dancing and dinner at a business club’s Diwali party. Organised by Harrow East MP Bob Blackman and his business club, more than 300 people turned up to the Premier Banqueting Hall, in Harrow Weald, last week to celebrate Diwali – the Hindu festival of lights. The event was attended by Mayor of London and Uxbridge MP Boris Johnson, mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith, Harrow’s own Lord Dolar Popat and Rajrajeswar Guruji of Siddhashram Shakti Centre. Hundreds of devotees celebrate birth of holy Lord

DANCING and devotional songs were enjoyed as hundreds attended an annual Hindu festival. Held at the International Siddhashram Shakti Centre in Wealdstone on Saturday, September 5, Harrow Borough Commander Simon Ovens joined the Hindu community to mark the celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna. Known as Janmashtami, the festival was also attended by Harrow Mayor Cllr Krishna Suresh and his wife along with several other members of Harrow council. Hundreds of devotees celebrated from early morning until midnight, welcoming Lord Krishna with dancing, mantra chanting and singing of bhajans – devotional Hindu songs. More than £50,000 raised in Nepal fundraisers

Thousands of pounds were raised and candles were lit as communities paid their respects to those who lost their lives in the Nepal earthquake. Members of the Shree Swaminarayan Temple, in Wood Lane, Stanmore, held a fundraiser on Friday evening in aid of those affected by the earthquake in Nepal last week. More than 500 people attended an evening of prayers and hymns at the temple, and candles were lit in the memory of around 7,000 people who lost their lives in the disaster. Donations continued to grow throughout the evening and quickly surpassed £45,000, with the temple itself pledging the initial £5,000. The money is already being used on the ground to order 500 emergency shelter tents and supply rice to thousands of affected families, being coordinated by devotees and saints from Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Bhuj Kutch and other sister Shree Swaminarayan Temples in Nepal. DURING the Queen’s visit to Harrow she will be presented with a book of photographs of inspirational people in our borough. The collection, 60 Faces, is made up of images of people who have made a difference, people who have shown bravery and people who have entertained Harrow, each one representing one year that Her Majesty has been on the throne. As part of the unveiling of the exhibition by Harrow Council’s photographer Dermot Carlin, each person whose image has made up the collection will attend the royal visit and some will be given the honour of meeting the Queen or Prince Philip.
